Grassland Management for Beef & Dairy farms

Grassland

Current figures estimate that 26% of the world land area and 70% of the world agricultural area are covered by grasslands, which contribute to the livelihoods of over 800 million people. They are an important feed source for livestock, a habitat for wildlife, provide environmental protection, storage of carbon and water and in situ conservation of plant genetic resources.

In livestock farming, the quality of the basic feed is important in order to support the vitality and performance of the animals in the best possible way.
In view of rising feed costs, increasing land shortages and limited resources, efficient feed management is becoming increasingly important. For a cattle or dairy farm, it is crucial how much high-quality feed will be available. In practice, there are still considerable hidden reserves in feed management.

With consistent process planning and systematic controlling, as well as the right equipment, these existing feed reserves can be made available and mass and nutrient losses can be reduced.

The basis is grassland management in the form of cultivation with re-seeding or new seeding of the forage areas. The exact timing and intensity of treatments should always be adapted to the conditions on the meadows, pastures or arable forage areas. Important decision criteria include crop density, soil moisture, undesirable weeds or matted areas, and the proportion of overwintered grasses.
